The night of lights and laughter

What a great evening this was. My grandmother being very ill, I was sad and depressed and was thinking of skipping the event. Thanks to my mother for encouraging me to participate in this occasion; I enjoyed to my hearts content today. The party was a complete success, from every perspective….

It brought together not only Indians from every corner of Denmark, but people from all over the world to unite and share our joy we are always so willing to spread through this festival of lights. Lights illuminate the dark corners of our mind reducing our differences to bring us together.

What an evening it was… Anitaji (the first person I met when I came in) was looking modern, feminine and beautiful at the same time…….Starting from the decorations Sheetal made with the candles and multi-coloured petals at the entrance and the hall, to the music and dance that brought everybody together; it was an effort earnestly worth admiring. Ripu’s and Trisha’s very nice presentations set the stage for today’s celebration… adding perfect meaning to the purpose of gathering and celebrating this evening. Astha’s dance was undoubtedly brilliant…I could even imagine Vidyabalan in those postures, flowing with ‘mere dholna sun’…very commendable…. and Manila’s song (pardon me if the name is not correctly spelt…the chances of that are very high!) was very soothing, giving a chance to reflect back on the old bollywood classics when each song used to be an elaborate poetry expressing emotions in a way that made them unforgettable and evergreen.

The amount of thought the organizers have put in managing this event was amazing…..I have to mention the children’s corner, it was heaven for children; with colourful sketch pens drawing books and coloring pencils lying on the table ready for them to plunge in and have a great time! And given the fact that our children are a bit too energetic to sit on chairs for more than 5 mins (max!), I think the corner served its purpose quite well! When they were not in the children’s corner, they were having a time of their life, back stage (so thanks for having a back stage to keep them there!!).

By no means can I forget the choice of music….oh my God! The way you set the mood of people differently by diversifying the music when they were participating in different events …was just amazing! I won’t be surprised if people did not even notice that…because I felt the music was chosen in a way that it flows inseparably and spontaneously taking our minds smoothly along the undulating course of events….you guys know how to manage an event…. hats off to your effort and thoughtfulness!!

The concept of having a ‘secret judge’ (our beloved Lakshman,) for choosing the best dressed couple just made it so much more exciting, what an idea! (yes the secret judge is a very good friend of mine and he kept it secret from me! Can you believe that! …Not that I had any chance of winning this competition even if had Lakshman on my side…my husband at that time was having coffee with his colleague in Washington…..what a disaster!)

But I cannot complain J; I was very happy to be awarded for a correct answer (thanks to my beautiful table mates, who decided that I should take the gift!) and for decorating the puja thali (courtesy: me and my daughter Surabhi)….

And last in my list but not by any means the least…..The Dandia Workshop….it was just fabulous…from the idea to the execution of it…it was superb. It set the mood of music loving Indians to the perfect rhythm and then there was no stopping to the marvelous spontaneous dancing that came out of us….by the end of the day, I had spent all my energy laughing and dancing and sharing and rejoicing…it could not have been any better.

Thanks to those who worked so hard to make this happen for all of us….Thank you!

(Admin note: We will soon post the pictures and videos from the event)

chotasaWhat can we give to our begging children? What are they actually begging for? Those who were born on streets where people walk and spit and urinate…who take their first breath in the thick polluted air coming out of the cars passing by… cars, whose owners never cared about pollution control. They grow up to be little beggars, graduate as thieves, then if they are good, the world of crime opens its door for them, where they complete their masters and phds and post docs until we learn about them in news papers…. Who among us has not experienced a small dirty face outside the window of our car or taxi, pushing in two small hands through a small opening in our raised car window-glasses...windows of the cars are always shut...due to pollution perhaps... Or often a little girl carrying a new born, pleading for an ice-cream catches your attention, when you are standing on the street buying some for your-self and your friends?

The current trend is to call people, who get affected by this situation.. 'stupid'..or...'softy'...well may be it is also going to be a taboo to be human some day soon!....Who knows what the meaning of being humane will be in the coming years! My country India…..is a country very enchanting, due to the fact (which I have realised several times) that, just when you have thought about what can be done to whatever is pulling India behind...and finally feel that nothing can happen here due to corruption and blindness for old and harmful traditions and mindsets...then suddenly there is a spark of light that comes up from extreme darkness... and you start hoping again....

I saw in 'Dateline Punjab', a program in Sony channel, that a temple trust (Govind Godham Temple Trust) in Chandigarh, has established a school, where the children of beggars, who also used to beg and bring good money are now going to school and doing well!

Sureshji is going to Chandigarh next month.... so, maybe he will find it worth while to visit them and encourage them further! It will surely give their beautiful, neglected spirits a big boost! They spend $10 per month (approx. 60 DKK) for every child...so any body who feels for the cause are most welcome to extend their care and support This initiative, in my opinion, has set an example that every state and every city and town and village should follow....and this should come to a news forum that can reach Indian public at a larger scale……may be our leader Ripu can help there (he has great ideas, good resources and an open mind to realise them. This is no buttering Ripu, just an honest opinion ...) So lets join hands and lend support and show our enthusiasm for a cause that we all have spent innumerable thoughts on…we can now make a difference… To learn about the news you can go to www.punjabdateline.com To comment on the program you can visit This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Since the birth of ‘Indians in Aarhus’ Ripu has always encouraged us to write something for the website. But life has been so hectic and monotonous with challenges and work pressure of project management that I could hardly encourage myself to find time to write anything….

Together with being a PhD student, I have another identity; I am the mother of a 2½ year old girl. When I come back home from the world governed by the exertion to create an original and successful masterpiece, I drain myself to give all the time and love I can to my little one…to make up for my absence in her life during the day. Yes, there were the weekends to find some time in, but in between two frantic weeks, they only make me work even more to make our apartment somewhat habitable and then crave for a moment to relax, since by the time I am done.. Monday starts knocking at the door.. , which for me means waking up in the morning before the birds..

But today although I am at work, I will spend a few minutes to write a bit about the diwali gathering. We have been practicing for the songs we were going to sing, a few times with Vijay, Shirin, my sister Sunirmala and Sureshji (always asking him to give us one more day to practice…what could we do with out our tabalchi! and our beloved guide). Starting from there, meeting Anitaji (who was looking beautiful that day in her Indian attire) and some other Indians and Bengalis (at the bus stand in the Centrum); talking about Durga puja and Phuchkas (golgappas) on our way to the party-venue...…it was a perfect start of a perfect evening for me…

From then on…it was like a smooth flow of enjoyable events…meeting our group members (singing group), getting cold hands and nervous about our performance, making mistakes in our singing turns when we practiced in a small empty room and then trying to hold courage before and through the performance… it was all just so good and rewarding. And yes! How people were shocked at first to see my very short hair (not that I was not expecting that!) but later appreciated it…the rhythmic music, and dancing together with every body (Kaustuv, my sister, Anuja, Cecilia, my daughter and Cecilia’s mother) was just too good!!

I must not forget the ‘desi girl’, who danced so confidently…no fear of performing in public…actually she didn’t even need to be confident…not to forget how Speridon’s and Sureshji’s jugalbandi, Jagjit Singh’s gazal and fun songs about rail gadi/ red wine evoked humor and nostalgia for Indian classical/ old bollywood songs…..and of course Sureshji and Kaustuv’s comedy!….I thoroughly enjoyed it, the way they communicated with each other and made themselves bring out the darkness that lurks both in educated and not so educated Indian minds.. it was very commendable…

It just does not stop here……the game! Rolling the dice and (luckily) winning a prize felt so good!

The food made by volunteers was great! The vadas which I did not eat at first (was waiting for my performance to be over! And then kept on searching for one and finally got a couple) were so delicious!!

Meeting my ‘used to be’ dance teacher (probably ‘going to be’ again soon) with her Bharatnatyam team and my dansk dance friends added an extra spree to the whole event! And of course the quiz…my God!….You guys (the volunteers) did not leave any stone unturned to make this evening a success, the way you involved people by leaving paper slips under their chair…you guys know how to communicate and bring people together …!

Part of it might sound unbelievable, but I also found cleaning together and gossiping in the end quite pleasurable and actually did not feel like leaving….. before all the volunteers were free, but solely because we had children with us and had to catch two last busses to go home, we left by eleven.

What can I say about the volunteers (including the one whose name Ripu did not mention…………its you Ripu!); hats off to you guys, for putting an amazing effort to… (first of all) make a brilliant website, conceive the idea of celebrating Diwali, plan for it, for taking the responsibility willingly on your own shoulders and executing it so enthusiastically and beautifully.

You made it possible for us to have a very fond memory of celebrating the festival of lights so far away from our own families, in an evening which would probably otherwise  have been one of the many cold and dark autumn nights in Denmark . So, thank you…

 Sumangala.
